Iris Shanks
Some of us have kept back some ashes and have them made into jewellery. Also some tiny urns with inscriptions so she will always be with us. 3 of us have tattoos. Then for her final resting place we took her to her favourite beach and scattered her ashes scattered roses and played one of her favourite songs by Johnny Mathis - The 12th of never with her children and Granddaughter. The Sun was shining it was an absolutely beautiful day.
Stokes bay beach- Scattered at sea
1932 Jan 6th Iris was a happy, hard working family driven young 92 yr old woman. She was blessed with 4 wonderful Children, 4 Grandchildren, 7 biological Great Grandchildren, and 1nonbiological. 4 Great Great Grandchildren and 7 non biological Great Great Grandchildren. Although due to where they live she never got to spend much time with them. But we spoke to her often about them. Later in life she enjoyed holidays with her sister Margaret with whom she was close to until her Sister’s passing in 2017. Iris lived her life by the sea, Stokes bay where she would walk daily with her Sister or her partner Bill. She loved nature and the outdoors. Unfortunately in her early to mid 80s she developed Dementia. Where she did say she would be happy to go then. That she had lived her life and was content. But through the love and support of family she kept going for 9 years with this awful disease. For as long as possible we used to take her out of the care home and pushed her along the beach or a trip down town for a slice of chocolate cake and a coffee. She loved singing along with Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin. She also spoke via video chat to her Brother Paul in Hong Kong regularly until she died peacefully in her sleep on the 4th June 2024.
