William Sloan

Windham—William “Billy” Sloan, 75, passed away peacefully at his home on March 15, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Billy was born at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine, on April 20, 1948, the son of the late Charles and Delia (Foley) Sloan.

Billy’s life was one of service and dedication. Following in his brother Charlie’s footsteps, he enlisted in the military right after high school. He proudly served in the Navy for four years aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16) aircraft carrier in Pensacola, Florida. He advanced in rate and rating during his service, ultimately achieving Machinist’s Mate Second Class.

Upon his honorable discharge, Billy returned home and embarked on a career at Northern Utilities, where he devoted himself for nearly four decades in various roles until his retirement. Billy’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life; he volunteered for the Regional Transportation Program (RTP), a role that brought him immense pride and fulfillment. He was known for his kind heart, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Outside of work, Billy was a man of many passions. An avid lover of horses and member of the Maine Harness Horseman’s Association, he spent countless hours training and racing his own horses at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, earning blue ribbons as a Sulky driver season after season. Billy enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including fishing, gardening, boating, improving his lakefront home, and reading. A devoted Elvis Presley fan, he cherished listening to the King’s music. He owned and adored pet dachshunds.

Billy loved his family and friends; he found joy playing with his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as “Grampy” or “Pop Pop”; he loved grabbing breakfast with coworkers, or “the boys,” as Billy called them. Spending time with family was most important to Billy, and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His unwavering honesty, strong work ethic, and compassionate nature touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Billy is survived by his wife, by his side for almost 40 years, Ruth Carpenter-Sloan; children, Amiee Sloan, Kimberly Sloan, Bill Carpenter IV and wife Wendy, Jon Carpenter and partner Casey Webster, Carissa and husband Bryan Twomey, and best friend Paul Lewis, whom he loved as a son; grandchildren, Kristyn and Jaycob Purdy, Billy and CJ Carpenter, Kylie, Ashlynn, and Harley Twomey; great-aunt, Katherine “KP” Foley; brothers, Charlie and wife Donna Sloan, Stephen and wife Debbie Sloan, Michael and wife Brenda Sloan; sister, Dede and late husband Jeff Smith; beloved nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and friends. Billy was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Sloan.
