Alan Roffey
This poem was read at his funeral service, it sums up our love of the Lakes!
"Lost in the Lakes" by Steven Corbett
We got lost in those hills and Lakes, so lost
Forgot who we were for those few days, lost ourselves to the pubs and the people, to the wind rippled water, the wide open sky.
Lost in the light and the landscape, to the whispers and the rustle of the season.
Marked time by the width of a meadow, by early morning climbs and slow descents.
Gave ourselves up to its simplicity, walked, talked, ate and slept.
Had time to remember, little to forget, found that silly side of ourselves.
Dreamers, schemers, post children in-betweeners.
Imagined we might get lost forever in this little part of heaven, and its changeable weather.
You and I, lost and forever. ❤
His ashes were taken in a biodegrable pillow urn by a Keswick Launch to be laid to rest on his favourite English Lake, Derwentwater in Keswick. The most beautiful spot on the lake was chosen to submerge the urn, and as if by magic the short shower of rain stopped and a rainbow appeared over his mountains! Keep enjoying those lakes and mountains my love.
Alan was the best husband ever, he loved Rugby, music, reading, travelling, walking/hiking and nature. We travelled extensively but he always said that Switzerland and the English Lakes were his favourite places on earth and he enjoyed climbing the mountains in the Lake District and visited every year for 30 years. He was taken far too soon, and of him, it’s definitely true what people say, that “the good die young”!
